Sport at Haygrove - Spring Term 2

It has been another excellent and busy term for sport at Haygrove with lots of success to celebrate.

Trampolining - Haygrove students are National Champions!

Members of Haygrove Trampoline Squad took part in the British Schools Trampoline Championships at Telford International Centre on Saturday 16th March. Our trampolinists performed very well against a strong field of the best School and Club bouncers in Great Britain. After an exceptionally impressive performance Jamie was crowned 7-9 Elite Boys National Champion.

The 7-9 Elite Girls team (Siyaana, Emily, Mia and Izzy) narrowly came in second place against a very strong field.

The 9-10 Novice Girls Team (Maya, Evie, Jess and Jess) bounced very well performing more difficult routines than in the last round, but missed out placing in the top three teams this year.

These students train very hard, putting in many long hours practicing for these competitions. They deserve all of the praise and recognition that they receive. All of our trampolinists showed great confidence in their performances, respectfulness to their team mates and competition and resilience throughout all stages. We are really proud of you all!

Thank you to Den Gibbs for his excellent coaching, Tim for driving the minibus, Lulu for officiating all day, Maya and Mia for their help in officiating and Emily for helping organising the bouncers on the day.

Netball

Our Netball Leaders from Year 9 and Year 10 girls helped host a Primary School netball tournament this term with 8 local primary schools at Haygrove. The girls umpired and scored all of the games. They were fantastic! All the girls showed great confidence and integrity and were brilliant ambassadors for Haygrove School. Thank you to Alicia, Lyra, Grace, Elouise, Ellie and Evie.

We had an outstanding finish to the Year 9s Sedgemoor league campaign with a dominant performance across the board. The girls have finished the season undefeated and showed that even when being asked to play out of position, they still had the confidence and courage to excel! Outstanding and well deserved Champions!

The Year 7 netball team had their long-awaited first ever netball fixture against Chilton. A 5-2 victory and a sense of pride to a part of the Haygrove sporting family! There has been lots of progress made during the lunchtime training club this term. It is great to regularly have over 20 students training each week.

The Year 8s had their final Sedgemoor League Tournament this week. Victories over King Alfred’s and BCA meant they finished as District Champions and undefeated in the Sedgemoor league. What an incredible achievement!

Cricket

Congratulations to our Under 15 Boys Indoor Cricket team who qualified for the County Finals finishing 3rd overall and the U13 indoor cricket team who finished 4th overall. A huge well done to both teams!

The boys put in an excellent performance and played really well showing great determination. Despite not getting the result that we had hoped for in our games, both teams showed great resilience and team spirit throughout the day. Over twenty schools entered each competition, so for our teams to finish 3rd and 4th in Somerset is absolutely brilliant and something everyone should all feel incredibly proud of.

Futsal

Haygrove hosted a Year 5/6 futsal tournament at Haygrove, where we welcomed eleven local primary schools to the ATP. Our Year 9 students were on hand to help. The boys did exceptionally well, showing great confidence and empathy to referee the games fairly and effectively. They were all fantastic ambassadors for Haygrove School. Thank you to Fred, Josh, Josh, Tom, Jayden, Jude, Oakley, Sawyer and Matthew.

John Irish, tournament organiser gave some lovely feedback - 'Can I take this opportunity to thank Mr Cook and his team of Year 9 students for hosting and running the event.  The students were superb.'

Football

Football at Haygrove this term has created a brilliant community with so many students taking part in the many fixtures and lunchtime clubs. Over 30 players in Year 8 have already represented Haygrove at football. This is absolutely superb.

We have also seen some excellent results this term:

Year 7 - Finished tied on points with Chilton but finished 2nd by 1 goal on goal difference.

Year 8 - Finished 2nd at the District Finals to Chilton, with the game being decided by penalties after a draw in the final.

Year 9 - District Champions after beating BCA 4-1 in the final.

Year 10 - District Champions after beating BCA 3-0 in the final. The Year 10 Boys Football Squad completed an historic 100% winning streak for 2024, capped by a fantastic 3-0 win against BCA on their home turf. The whole squad has been fantastic this season, displaying maturity, intelligence, competitiveness, commitment, humility and support for each other in every match! They are ambassadors to their sport, each other and the school.

Year 11 - District Runners up after losing 1-0 to Chilton in the final.

It was a pleasure to have the resident 'Haygrove band' complete with drums supporting at some of our fixtures! Their support was second to none and always respectful.
