Sport at Haygrove - Spring Term 1

We have had a great half term for sport at Haygrove. The PE staff have thoroughly enjoyed having clubs and fixtures back on, with a real sense of enthusiasm for the extra-curricular programme. Our students have been brilliant too and our lunch time clubs have really taken off. There is still opportunity for students to join in next term:

Monday – Year 11 football and Year 10/11 netball

Tuesday – Year 7 Football and Year 7/8 netball

Wednesday – Year 9 football and Year 9 netball

Thursday – Year 10 football

Friday – Year 8 football and KS4 Badminton

Well done to all Haygrove students who have represented the school in Cricket, Netball, Futsal, Football, Swimming and Trampolining.

Cricket

Our U13 indoor cricket team played really well in their fixtures against Chilton and Brymore winning both matches. They now progress to the next round of the tournament. Good luck to the team!

Netball

Grace and Esme, both Year 9, have been selected into the Somerset Satellite Academy. This is an amazing opportunity for both girls and congratulations on making the selection. They will now have access to additional training with specialist coaches to help them progress their netball.

The Year 8s made their long-awaited Sedgemoor netball return this term with a trip to King Alfred’s.  What a fabulous team they are and the netball was outstanding too! They celebrated fantastic wins against Chilton (13-0) and King Alfred’s (13-0).

Our Year 9 netball team performed brilliantly in their recent matches winning all three games. Thank you to Grace, Evie and Abi, who were fantastic as our Captains and Coach.

The final scores were - Haygrove vs Chilton: 8-0, Haygrove vs BCA: 10-0, Haygrove vs Blake: 13-0

The Year 11s played a mixed 6th form/Year 11 Taunton School team this week. A long anticipated return to the court saw a 28-8 victory and an invite back to take on a higher team. The mixed Year 9 & 10 team also played Taunton School this evening with another great win - 29-7. A huge thank you to Marie, Darcey and Ella for their commitment to helping coach younger students.

Futsal

There has been a great turnout for Year 8 Futsal training this term with 35+ students joining in each week. The team took part in a tournament, saving their best performance for the last game against Blake. The team showed great determination, resilience and confidence in all of the matches.

The Year 8 team also took part in an 8-a-side tournament with two teams playing. There were fantastic performances from all 18 players involved. Well done everyone!

This week Haygrove will host a local primary school Y5/6 Futsal competition at school. Thank you to our Year 9 leaders for doing a brilliant job supporting this event.

Football

Football this term has given our students opportunity to not only compete competitively against other schools, with the Year 9 boys team seeing a convincing 3-0 win Year 9 football boys beat Chilton 3-0, but also to be ambassadors for the school. The Year 11 boys team really stood out this term. Mr Cook wanted to congratulate the whole team for their conduct during and after matches - they all said thank you and behaved as young men as opposed to children.

The Year 9 boys football team played BCA this week. The squad of 15 was picked from 35 regular attendees to training on a rotation process. The boys put on an excellent display of quality football at Haygrove's home pitch eventually winning 5-0!

Trampolining

The Haygrove Trampoline Squad competed in the Southern Zonal Trampoline Championships and performed exceptionally well progressing onto the national competition.

Year 9 student Jamie came in 1st place against strong opposition in the 7-9 Elite boys and will now progress to the National Finals. The 7-9 Elite Girls team, Siyaana, Emily, Mia and Izzy, were crowned champions with Siayaana coming 1st and Emily coming 3rd. Both girls will now proceed as individuals to the National Finals in March, with Mia and Izzy joining them for the team competition.

The 9-10 Novice Girls team, Maya, Evie, Jess and Jess, came in 2nd place with Maya qualifying as an individual and all the team progressing to the National Finals.

The 7-9 Intermediate team performed very well finishing just outside of the medals in a very strong category. Whilst they will not progress to the Nationals, they displayed excellent promise for the future.

Thank you to Den Gibbs for coaching, Tim for driving the minibus incredibly well in very adverse weather conditions. Thanks also to our former student Lulu, parents Claire and Ali, and students Siyaana, Emily and Maya for working as officials. We would not be able to compete without your help.

Good luck for Nationals!

Swimming

A team of students from Haygrove School competed in Bridgwater’s first swimming gala in almost 25 years and were declared the winners overall. The Girls’ Team and the Year 9s and Over Team also came in first position. Congratulation to the Haygrove Swimming Team – Malakai, Will, Phoebe, Archie, Noah, Emily, Heath, Aiden, Luca, Harrison, Ella, Ava, Isabel, Freya, Millie, Molly, Matilda and David.
