First Steps - Yr 6 Transition

Excellent partnerships with our local primary schools ensure continuity of support and a smooth transition process. Our First Steps journey gives parents and children opportunities to visit the school, speak to staff and students, ask questions and then make an informed Secondary school choice. Once places have been allocated, the journey continues so that everyone is prepared for the September start.

STEP 1 - Year 6 Open Mornings and our Open Evening take place in September and October to give parents a chance to see the school in action, meet some of our students and staff and get answers to any questions they may have. Parents then make their choice of school for their children.

STEP 2 - The Local Authority will confirm which applicants have been allocated places at Haygrove School. This is normally in early March.

STEP 3 - Welcome letters are sent to parents in Spring, informing them of Induction Evenings and referring them to the school website for the latest information.

STEP 4 In May and June, our Assistant Headteacher or Head of Year 7, along with some of our current students, visit all our local Primary schools to talk to Year 6 students about Haygrove School, our expectations and opportunities.

STEP 5 In the Summer term, letters are sent to parents with details of Tutor Group allocation, the dates and times of Induction Evenings, where parents and pupils meet with Tutors, Head of Year and senior staff.

STEP 6 Our July Induction Day provides an opportunity for Year 6 students who are joining us in September to experience some lessons and make friends within their Tutor Group.

STEP 7 Only Year 7 and Year 11 students attend the very first day of Autumn term. The day is spent getting to know Tutors and Prefects, with planned activities throughout, to help new students to "find their feet" within the school.
