A group of lucky students have made the trip of a lifetime to visit our Chinese partners in Shanghai, China. Of course the visit was not just to spend time at the Yew Wah School, but also to experience the sights and culture of this interesting Chinese city. Despite the long journey, after lunch at their Shanghai hotel, the group set off immediately to visit the classically designed Yu Gardens and take a walk down the riverside promenade, The Bund, and along the East Nanjing Road, known for being one of China’s premier shopping streets. Two days of exploring gave the students the opportunity to visit some of China’s most famous sights such as the World Expo Centre, the World Financial Centre and the ancient town of Zhujiajiao. They rode on the Maglev, the fastest train the in world, took in the stunning cityscape views from Binjiang Avenue and enjoyed an evening cruise along the Huangpu River. This experience was only slightly undermined by the soaking they received as the edge of a typhoon passed over the city.
The next two days were spent joining their Yew Wah buddies for lessons and learning about Chinese culture, art and music as well as experiencing Chinese cookery and PE lessons. As part of the fun, and as an insight into traditional Chinese customs, their new Chinese friends gave their British visitors a ‘make-over’ which included face-painting and traditional dress.
After a day at the huge Happy Valley theme park, which is home some of the most thrilling rides and rollercoasters in the world, and a visit to the Shanghai HQ of the multinational Coca Cola company, the students drew their amazing adventure to a close with a cruise along the Suzhou Canal and a tour of the Suzhou Silk Factory before eating their final Chinese feast and packing their bags for the long journey home.
